Community Health Advisors in the USA and Abroad: Successes, Issues, and Challenges

This presentation will examine the role of "promotores" and other community health advisors (CHAs) in health care systems and health promotion campaigns. Examples will be drawn from work not only from the USA/Mexico Border region but also from experiences in Latin
America, Asia and Africa. Questions to be discussed include: 1) what is the typical role of the CHA in formal and informal health care systems? 2) are CHAs effective? And if so, are they cost-effective? 3) what support do CHAs need to optimize their impact?  Experiences
in chronic disease prevention as well as infectious disease control will be discussed.
